Summary/Abstract: “Science has always been in conflict with narratives. Judged by the yardstick of science, the majority of them prove to be fables”, noted Jean-Francois Lyotard in his The Postmodern Condition. Though Lyotard seems to contradict himself somewhat a few lines further on when he admits that science itself turns to the great narratives when it comes to establishing its own legitimacy, from the point of view of the psychologist, the statement is all the more revealing for being equivocal. It highlights, or so it seems, the fundamental difficulties with the discipline as such. These difficulties are currently being given yet another reformulation just now, not least because the narrative and the dialogue appear to be such promising models.
