Summary/Abstract: In contemporary world the consumption of medicines, especially without prescription, increases significantly. Unused medicines and metabolites of their transformations are discharged to the sewage and next into the environment. The article presents the problem of the presence of pharmaceuticals in municipal wastewater, in surface water and drinking water. There are presented the most common pharmaceuticals in waters, the concentration levels and their impact on organisms. The importance of elimination this type of contaminants at source, i.e. through increase in consumer awareness and through effective sewage treatment methods, is stressed. Also activities for continuous monitoring of the substances and to increase knowledge of their effects on living organisms are important in this scope.
