Summary/Abstract: It almost goes without saying that slaves were supposed to be as uneducated as possible, yet few rules are without exceptions. In my paper I shall look at two cases. The first (Douglass) will focus on how education was sought with a clear purpose in mind: freedom. The second (Topsy) will offer a new perspective: education was offered without ever being wished.
