Summary/Abstract: The author of this article sets out its views on the age and origin of the name Ungheni, a problem far less discussed by specialists. I reviewed a number of assumptions, opinions, expressed along the time, including the popular version of the origin of the toponym Ungheni. The conclusion reached, based on analysis of written medieval documents, the examination of existing geographical spot, seem to respond more or less accurate in this respect: Ungheni is a geographical name, derived from the aspect of the land which originally formed the city. The toponym is part of the old names, places and human settlements range, being spread at the beginning of the Moldovan feudalism and his subsequent linguistic evolution, was determined by the transgression of the village on both sides of the Prut, as well as by the changes in the local dialect during the XV-XVII centuries.
