THE BELIEF IN THE RESURRECTION OF THE BODY ACCORDING TO "THE CATECHISM OF THE CATHOLIC CHURCH"

Summary/Abstract: The penultimate article of the Apostle s Creed professes the belief in the resurrection of the body. Although it belongs to the final part of the Creed, it is not only one of the “last truths”, but it is also a culmination of the whole profession of faith, beginning with the truth of the creation of the world and human, since it talks about the ultimate things that await man. This study of the doctrine of the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC) on the bodily resurrection begins with proving that CCC reminds that the truth about the resurrection of the body has been proclaimed from the beginnings of Christianity despite a fierce opposition it has been meeting. Discussing the Catechism’s understanding of the bodily resurrection, the author first explains the understanding of Christ’s resurrection in the body. The Catechism stresses that the basis for the eleventh article of faith is the Christian belief that man rises in the body by means of participation in the resurrection of Christ. Then the paper discusses the Catechism’s commentary on how the truth about the resurrection of the dead slowly “matured” in the history of the revelation, and underlines this aspect of CCC’s teaching. It also points out that the discussed part of the Catechism explains the meaning of the resurrection, whom it concerns, and how the resurrection in the body is to be understood ,as well as when it is to happen. The last part of the paper is dedicated to the theological implications of the Catechism’s doctrine of the subject. It not only presents the presumptions underlying CCC’s explanation of the resurrection of the body, but also how the presentation of the doctrine in CCC is to be seen against the background of the contemporary debates on the belief of the resurrection of the body or the resurrection of the dead.
