Summary/Abstract: In his 1992 book, Cigányságom vállalom (I Accept My Gypsy Identity), György Rostás-Farkas explores how today’s Gypsies generally relate to themselves as Gypsies. The author lists a number of statements, all of which, essentially, are qualified expressions of the two basic attitudes; “I ’m a Gypsy” or “I ’m not a Gypsy” . We are not told whether these statements are actual quotes from interviews or the author’s own interpretations of how these attitudes are verbalized. Let us nevertheless accept the following sentences as possible answers to an underlying ethnic dilemma.
