Summary/Abstract: Salih Asim (1869-1935) was born in Skopje and came from the Smitchiler family, one of the oldest and most famous families in Skopje. He spent his life in Skopje and also died here. He was three times elected president of Skopje municipality and with his activities became the most famous mayor among the citizens of Skopje in the late Ottoman period. Salih gained this popularity with a few building endeavors. Firstly, he coved the river Serava, that flew through the middle of Skopje Old Bazaar and which was a waste channel, and turned it into one of the most important bazaar streets today. Secondly, he built the quay of the river Vardar in the city centre with which he regulated the river and made a walking path for the citizens. Salih Asim also laid the foundations of today’s Skopje City Park. With these three endeavors he gained popularity in the city becoming a ‘star’ among the citizens. For these activities he was awarded by the Ottoman sultan and later by the Serbi-an king.
