Do the Stars get Darkened? The Case of Duychev

Summary/Abstract: The publication searches to answer the question why the best Bulgarian specialist in Me-dieval studies and Byzantine studies Ivan Duychev (1907-1986) always has been shining with light more visible far away from the Bulgarian borders and invisible in his homeland. Ignored by the Bulgarian institutions after 9th of September 1944 and suppressed by the official and hidden mechanisms of power he has preserved respect and acknowledgement abroad. By the end of his thorny life he succeeded to get out of the forced isolation in his home imposed by the political conjuncture, ideological chains and all powerful State Security. И едва в края на трънливия си жизнен път успява да излезе от наложената му от политическата конюнктура, идеологеми и вездесъщата ДС принудителна изолация у дома. Part of the answers could be discovered in the accessible documents and dossiers from the archive of State Security which testify about a broken academic carrier in the Sofia University, about the observation and controlled personal and public life of Duychev.
