Summary/Abstract: Among many studies concerning the topic of information society, there is a lack of studies on the role of ICT in the spatial development (at a perspective lower than NUTS 0). The notion of place, geographic dimension as a result of the development of ICT is pushed into the background. Never-theless, the local and regional sphere still plays the key role in the life of today’s societies. Taking into account this fact, the article is an attempt to quantify the degree of development of the information technology society with reference to the social and economic development of the European Union – in the regional perspective. The aim of the article is also to verify the regions that are back-ward and to answer the question about the phase at which the Polish regions are in comparison with other similarly developed economic regions in Europe. The factors influencing the development of the network society have been presented in the article, as well as these factors of the network society that influence the social and economic development the most.
