Summary/Abstract: The paper focuses less on the history of tourism and rather on the appearance, development and multiplication of the factors that ensured the development of the latter in the modern period, going from railway or maritime to car or plane transportation. Modernized transport provides rapidity and independence to the tourist willing to travel longer and longer distances, in order to find out the new offers that were becoming accessible due to the development of the hotel and road infrastructure. Passive, relaxation tourism starts to replace sports tourism, while circuit tourism, which satisfied the best the visitors’ curiosity, replaced leisure time tourism. Many of these achievements were possible due to governmental involvement in the states where tourism started to be understood as an important factor in the reviving of the economies, so affected by the wars. In such states, legislative measures were taken providing different facilities to the foreign tourists meant to make their vacations in those countries as attractive as possible, and ensuring thus a higher foreign currency intake, which will positively influence the balance of payments.
