The Role of Enterprise Content Management (ECM) Class Systems in Enterprises and Their Technological and Market Perspectives

Summary/Abstract: Enterprise Content Management (ECM) class systems are nowadays one of the key IT tools implemented in enterprises. This fact is easily witnessed by the growth of the Enterprise Content Management market and its most important players as described by analysts from such research and analytical companies as Gartner Inc. (Magic Quadrant for ECM 2013) or Radicati (Enterprise Content Management Market, 2013-2017). The aim of this paper is to update the notion of “content” and to define the concept of ECM platform. ECM platforms will be presented in the technological as well as market perspective. The concept of content management and its component technologies have evolved over the last twenty years. The evolution of that concept and the present place of content management in enterprises are presented in the first two parts of the paper. The main components and technologies employed to create ECM platforms are discussed in the third part of the paper using the example of the Alfresco platform which is quoted as the most dynamically developing one in the Gartner ranking. The concluding part of this paper features the analysis of the dynamics of the ECM market as well as presents its development trends. This paper serves only as an introduction to the deliberations on the problem of creating dedicated analytical and design tools to be used in the implementation projects of ECM class systems.
