Summary/Abstract: This paper explores the controversial issue of girls’ education, with a special focus on the instruction of Hungarian girls, proposing a cultural and historical approach. After some preliminary considerations on the questions raised in literature regarding the opportunity and limits of women’s instruction, I turn to the Hungarian initiatives promoting the education of girls. The final part of the article discusses a particular case, the Marianum Catholic high school for girls from Kolozsvár (Cluj) and its efforts to include culture, notably theatre in the pedagogical process.
