Summary/Abstract: Tolkien’s theory and practice of fantasy were intimately related, and both were fundamentally linguistic in nature. The art of fantasy was, for Tolkien, a particular kind of linguistic practice. Within The Lord of the Rings just this linguistic practice is absent; in its place we find an experimentation with differrent fantasies of linguistic acts: in some, words are transformed into things, in others language dispenses with words, and another is explicitly identified with the act of fantasy, and yet refers to nothing beyond its own world, yet generates the counsel that drives the plot of Tolkien’s story.
