Summary/Abstract: As a conclusion it can be stated that despite all the restrictions introduced by Augustus and related both to the number of manumissions by testament and to the acquisition of Roman citizenship by former slaves, Roman law granted freedmen with the citizenship provided that statutory requirements were fulfilled and the manumitter himself was a citizen. However, this resulted in altering the ethnic composition of the class of Roman citizens since slaves, who were enfranchised as Roman citizens in fact were not native Romans.
