Summary/Abstract: Cardiovascular risk is one of the primary issues for the psychiatrist when prescribing an antipsychotic treatment. Studies suggest that sudden cardiovascular death is based on QT prolongation. Although the mechanism by which this phenomenon occurs is not fully known, emerging cardiovascular events were overlooked because of their impact on the health. This article aims to centralize relevant studies published so far on increasing cardiovascular risk after initiation of antipsychotic treatment in patients with or without a history of cardiovascular pathology. Another objective is to clarify the assumption that the first generation of antipsychotics have a greater cardiovascular risk compared to the second generation.
