Summary/Abstract: Bulgaria is known for her established traditions and successful participation in Informatics competitions organized for secondary school students. The extracurricular forms of training in Informatics provide an opportunity to develop students’ potentials in programming as a natural continuation of their interest in computer games. The achievement of sustainable success is closely related with the answers to the following questions: what kind of knowledge of the subject should students acquire, what methods of training should be applied, and if there are teachers to train them in such a way that they become knowledgeable and skillful contestants. This paper presents several approaches, which have been applied in students’ training for participation in Informatics competitions and which led to improved results. Each method is described with its strong points and deficiencies, as well as the difficulties faced in its application.
