Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses different possibilities for identifying actants across linguistic and categorical contexts. An unambiguous identification of actants is needed for the purpose of contrastive lexicology and linguistic frameworks which attempt to state regularities of valency realization depending on the lexical category of the valency carrier. In the paper, three possibilities are reviewed: identification by lexeme specific role definitions, identification by generalized semantic roles and identification by positions within the actant frame. For all possibilities, the merits and shortcomings are demonstrated. We conclude that a mixed approach is needed to serve the purpose.
