Summary/Abstract: „A true Moldavian” from the Upper Country, schooled in the country, grecized in the academic atmosphere of Constantinople, where he served as the Patriarch’s “right hand” (by being his archdeacon), then spiritual shepherd in the apostolic see of Thessaloniki, returned, in his old age, in Moldavia, Gavriil Callimachi proved to be one of the most remarkable figures of his time. About him, it has been often discussed the context of his election as Metropolitan of Moldavia, in 1760, replacing Iacov Putneanul. Concerning his activity previous to this moment, very few aspects are known, the following paper trying to bring them to light, in the limits imposed by the quantity and, most of all, by the quality of the documentary sources.
