Summary/Abstract: The secularization of the monastic estates, in the Romanian Principalities, has been approached by the historians in various ways. Usually, they emphasize the importance of the law of December 13th/25th 1863 for the modernization of the Romanian state. The demarches undertook by the Romanian state, previous to the implementation of the secularization law, are, commonly, neglected by our historiography. This paper proposes to bring to discussion this very question, of great importance if we analyze the international situation of the Romanian Principalities. Although the second article of the Paris Convention, of 7th/19th august 1858, granted autonomy for the Romanian Principalities, the question of the estates of the dedicated monasteries could not be solved unilateral, by the Romanian state. With great efforts, after the union of the two Principalities was officially recognized, at international level, in 1862, the Romanian state started to bring this question into discussion, aiming to obtain the international consent for the secularization.
