Summary/Abstract: It is well known that cocosul („the cock”) is one of France’s symbols. In Latin, only one word gallus, expresses two notions: cocos (coq) and gal (gaulois). In this article I have shown to what extent the word coq has become established in everyday language (expressions, phrases, derivative words), as well as in onomastics.
