Responsible and sustainable tourism as an opportunity for mobilization of people with disabilities

Summary/Abstract: There are various assumptions of sustainable tourism, as well as definitions. The objectives of sustainable development relate primarily to the environment, its protection and care for the natural resources. However, the EU Sustainable Development Strategy (SDS) – beside the protection of the environment – distinguishes is also the issue of equality and social cohesion, relating to the ethical attitudes of tourism. People with disabilities have the same needs and motivations of traveling as healthy persons, but often their participation in tourism is limited by a number of barriers. All activities in tourism should avoid discrimination due to sex, race or even disability. Especially that tourism in the lives of people with disabilities is very important, considering different purposes such as: educational, health (rehabilitation, prevention of hypokinesia), etc. Thus, the issue of accessibility of tourism is very important so that social opportunities can be equal. Sustainable development of tourism gives people with disabilities greater opportunities to travel and leisure. This is done mainly by exerting the necessity of making travel products and services more accessible, as well as taking care of the environment. The purpose of this article is to present the principles of sustainable and responsible tourism and their role in mobilizing the disabled. The terminology of disability, psychological elements of tourism for disabled people and the tourism in the knowledgebased economy will also be mentioned in the article.
