Summary/Abstract: In the 19th century the liberalism of the industrial revolution and the marxist ideology were both materialist-minded. Between liberalism and marxism there was only a distribution debate. Both ideologies were support by positivist philosophy that divided thinking into disciplines. Bishop Áron Márton stressed the importance of value-based education instead of the positivist knowledge-focused education. Áron Márton had clear values and put the Supreme Director fi rst place in his thinking. Starting from this basis he pointed out that liberalism and marxism are essentially identical, they are both based on material approach. Áron Márton contrasted unrestricted capitalism with evangelical simplicity. During the communist regime he expressed that people should reveal the false theories regarding the tasks of the State. He said that the state power should have a moral basis. (Ethics belongs to the spiritual nature of man and it stands above fi nancial interests.) Áron Márton urged changes in pastoral work. He faced the materiality of the world and the materialisms as a personality developer apostle.
