Summary/Abstract: The text offers an introduction to reflections on how to understand the term “wall”, which not only means a physically constructed wall, but is also a metaphor for all kinds of barriers created for different purposes. The author considers the basic function of walls – both literal as well as metaphoric and symbolic ones – to be providing a sense of security. She sees this human need as part of both humanity’s biological and cultural and evolutionary heritage. The text discusses other functions that walls can perform, with a particular focus on the tasks they fulfil in relation to culture.
