Summary/Abstract: The article reviews concepts and theoretical positions associated with representations of space perceived as a cultural map. It looks at researchers working in inspiring contemporary theoretical trends, above all, those related to the so called ‘spatial turn’, as well as research from the field of postcolonial criticism, including that of Edward W. Said, Benedict Anderson, Larry Wolff, and, among Polish researchers, Elżbieta Rybicka, the author of a geopoetry project, drawing on Kenneth White’s concept. The main part of the article is devoted to a critical review of the issues discussed in the latest book by Przemysław Czapliński, titled Poruszona mapa (Eng. Moved Map), which is most likely the first comprehensive attempt to describe contemporary Polish literature and culture, and find an answer to the question of how modern Polish identity is shaped through its relations with regions of Europe of cultural importance to it.
