SYMMETRY AND ASYMMETRY IN INTERNATIONAL RELATIONS

Summary/Abstract: International Relations have evolved in close connection with the role of the state in society and with the power distribution within it, having been directly influenced by the evolution of international politics. Despite the fact that relations among states, generally, and diplomacy especially/particularly, entered the political sciences field relatively late, they both come from the beginning of civilization. Sometimes half-dark relations among states started to dominate politicians’ and competent forums’ preoccupations in the beginning of the 21st century, when profound transformations took place in the international security field. This (re)affirmation of international relations occurred due to the need to minimize human and material loss within emerging crises and conflicts. Under these circumstances, the nation-state plays a secondary role, while non-state actors begin to increasingly affirm themselves, including international non-governmental organizations with role in conflict management and human rights defense.
