Summary/Abstract: The text shows the personal approach to the explanation of a doll’s meaning in human life. It consists of a brief historical reflection, showing that the doll had been present already in ancient cultures. Then the analysis of the doll’s functions is done: 1) primitive function –to coordinate communication between the worlds of spirits and human beings; 2) magical function – to bewitch with dolls, for example a Voodoo doll; 3) anthropomorphic function – to humanize a doll as a “human image” as its “presence” has ritual and psychological meanings. The author also analyzes the “Effect of the Doll” and its main trait -“awareness of the impossibility of existence”. The main conclusion is the statement that “although the doll ontologically belongs to a completely different order than the human being, it plays a roll of the mirror of the human’s desires and thoughts.
