Summary/Abstract: The present paper analyses the relationship between cultural geographies, spatiallyreductive as they are, and literary geographies, as well as the way in which cultural-literaryproximities forge symbolic ontologies, aesthetic sensibilities and thought systems, reorganizelanguage and re-semanticize the imaginary of a historical age. The rapport between language andbeing, regarded from the perspective of the history of mentalities, allows us to address the literarytext from the standpoint of both a reductive hermeneutics of suspicion and a hermeneutics of faith.Irrespective of the geographical boundaries within which literature circumscribes its value system,it will assume the creative role of an identitary “symbolic ontology” whereby it inscribes thefundamental coordinates of an individual or collective self in relation to the given world.
