Summary/Abstract: Error in communication is the result of encoding and decoding issues.This article demonstrates a practical approach to L2 vocabulary learning through problem based learning and development of communicative competence on a need-to-know basis. The L2 language referred to in this article is English, but the same principles may beapplied to other L2 languages. The presentation sees vocabulary building in the light of the individual schemata. The primary focus is demonstrating the importance of developing and at the same time showing competence in using new vocabulary on a need-to-know basis through ownership to a product.
