Summary/Abstract: During the 20th century the number of states increased four times. About 40 states existed as – the same subjects of international law, in spite of numerous territorial, demographic or political changes. As for Poland, it is still a matter of discussion whether the Second Republic was legally the same state as the First Republic which collapsed at the end of the 18th century or a new state. The process of disintegration of states (secessionist movements) was much stronger than the process of their integration. The greatest changes on the political map of the world were a result of decolonization.
