Summary/Abstract: A brief overview of the development of archival activities on the territory of the Republic of Montenegro is provided through a fragmentary view of the historical development of the ever-present concern for the written word in Montenegro. Caring for the written word lies in the legal framework back in 1895 and since then, the country has always found ways to protect this area adequately. Status changes that have taken place have never been influenced by the concern for the preservation and processing of documents is reduced, on the contrary. The reform conducted in 1999 solved the issue of the coverage of the entire territory of the Republic of Montenegro network archives. Archives were declared a republic administrative organization. Archival department Kotor there since 1967, first under the auspices of Historical archives Kotor as the department of newer material, and since 1999 as an organizational area or unit in the system of the National Archives of Montenegro. With its eight offices and 104 archival funds, material sized to approx. 1100 meters, it protects, takes over, locates, collates, process and enables the use of archive material in the area of the two municipalities of Kotor and Tivat.
