Summary/Abstract: The authors consider the consequences of the lack of precision in terminology in the statements made by historians. The subject of the analysis is the testament of Bolesław III the Wrymouth, also known as a statute, regulation, or a succession contract. Such an act is widely regarded as a source of feudal fragmentation that continued in Poland for two centuries, and its interpretation affects our approach to the patrimonial conception of the state under the Piast dynasty.
