Andrej Mitrović: the Art of History

Summary/Abstract: Andrej Mitrović founded cultural history studies in our region, thus opening space for critical observations and the use of art as a complex and distinctive source for understanding the historical reality. Considering a work of art as a historical source, he studied not only cultural history, but he enriched approaches to history as a science in its broadest sense. His valuable and high achievements in the studies of cultural history are at the same time valuable and high achievements of modern historiography. Andrej Mitrović wrote about the importance of the art for understanding of history and historical processes in his books: Istorijsko u Čarobnom bregu: pokušaj interdisciplinarnog ogleda (1977), Angažovano i lepo: umetnost u razdoblju svetskih ratova (1914-1945), O božjoj državi i zlom spasenju (2007), Kultura i istorija (2008), as well as numerous studies and articles, which are the cornerstones for any further research on cultural history and the relation of art and history and art and politics in the national historiography.
