Summary/Abstract: The letters sent from Gian Luigi Frollo to Hugo Schuchardt between 1875 and 1879 allow an impressive insight into the development of studies on Romanian in the second half of the 19th century and allow us to reconstruct a small, but important chapter of the scientific, political and cultural life of the time. Frollo, an Italian-Romanian scholar who held the chair in history of the Romance literatures at the University of Bucharest, provides Schuchardt with important information about the Romanian language as well as about studies and publications on this topic. He also acts as an intermediary between the German-Austrian linguist and the most eminent personalities of the Romanian culture, politics and scientific research of that time.
