Summary/Abstract: The author presents two contradictory concepts of human work – a personalistic one, most fully expressed in John Paul II’s encyclical Laborem exercens, and the commodity one, accepted by the majority of economists and some of representatives of the labour law science. According to the first concept each type of work has the same ethical value, resulting from the fact that man is the subject of it (perpetrator), however, different types of work have different economic value; work is for man and not the other way round. According to the second concept – work is a commodity, though a particular one and the price of this commodity is remuneration; man should get adapted to work in the best possible way that is to the employer’s requirements in order to be a competitive “commodity”. The author advocates the first concept.
