Plant Names and Place Names. Preliminaries Concerning the Documents in Documenta Romaniae Historica (DRH)

Summary/Abstract: The study of Romanian plant names has not enjoyed a thorough research of the historical documents, in spite of their linguistic and cultural prominence. The present paper aims at presenting the plant names enclosed in the place names from the 14th and the 15th century documents published under the title Documenta Romaniae Historica (DRH). I found it useful to develop a small inventory of plant names in accordance with various categories of toponyms preserved in the documents. The description reveals that most plant names are preserved in the names of the settlements and in the references to various territorial boundaries used to delimitate properties. The examples are supported by reflections on the importance of the correlation between plant and place names.
