Summary/Abstract: Starting from the originary interest of toponomastic sciences, initially considered as ancilla historiae, going through the period of the study of the origin of a place name, and ending by the study of the toponymic system, that is its phonetic, morphologic and syntactic aspects, the evolution of the onomastic sciences throughout one and a half century has enabled nowadays the scientifical approach in a series of Departments of onomastic research in Romania, aiming to the completion of the regional toponymic dictionaries. The series Moldova of the Tezaur toponimic al României is based on the principles of the structural toponymic dictionary, in accordance, somehow, to the opinion of Kurt Baldinger regarding the necessity of having a phraseological dictionary of language: the word is functioning in speech only within a linguistic context, as well as the place name functions in its geographic context, that is in toponymic fields. The specific feature of this kind of toponymic dictionary is to focus on the definition of the denominative function as the essential issue in the study of the creation of toponymic fields and their functioning.
