Summary/Abstract: The article argues that one important aspect of Shakespeare’s modernity is his manifest concern with the relevance and possibilities of his own art, as highlighted in the analysis of the metadramatic dimension of Hamlet and of the paradoxes at the core of the theatrical experience.
