The Canons of the School of Nisibis. Introduction

Summary/Abstract: This text summarises the state of research on the East Syriac School of Nisibis andits Canons; it is followed by a Polish translation of Arthur Vööbus’ critical editionof the Canons’ Syriac version. After presenting briefly the sources available for thestudy of the School, the paper discusses the current understanding of the School’shistory, theology and organisational structure. It pays special attention to the selfawarenessof this community, its contacts with the Western(Roman) world as wellas its relation to the East Syriac monastic movement. The final section is devoted tothe textual tradition of the Canons.
