Summary/Abstract: The article discusses issues related to the identity of man living at the turn of XX and XXI centuries. Considerations are based on the thoughts expressed in the poems of Tadeusz Różewicz, a contemporary poet (1921-2014) regarded not only as the author of poems interpreted in the context of various philosophical concepts, but also predominantly as an original philosopher. The article considers the problem whether man described in Różewicz’s poems displays characteristics of modern consciousness - as the poet declares - or the postmodern consciousness. It also discusses the relationship between modernity and post-modernity in Różewicz’s poetry. This problem is illustrated in many of his poems in the volumes published at the turn of the century. It was based on the philosophical concept which Różewicz referred to and on researches concerning the problem of axiological crisis of the consumer society, lack of standards, individual and collective identity of human.
