Summary/Abstract: Many studies have focused on the impact of social factors on the success in L2 acquisition. Nevertheless, Schumann’s acculturation theory and significance of acculturation levels for acquiring L2 have not raised much interest in our writings. In this theoretical paper, we present Schumann’s acculturation theory and its role in acquiring L2 in natural environment. This paper specifically addresses the second language acquisition of L2 immigrants and the role of identity in this process. We present some of the results of previous studies, in order to answer some questions: is the degree of acculturation important for the immigrants’ success in acquiring L2 and, if so, to what extent; what outcomes in L2 acquisition are in connection with the lack of acculturation; what factors influence the degree of acculturation; does acculturation depend on immigrants’ attitudes toward the target language and its speech community? We also focus on the shortcomings of Schumann’s acculturation theory and the implications of this theory for the modern teaching practices.
