Summary/Abstract: The active movement of the amateur unions of the Ukrainian nation arose in Galicia at the end of the 19th century. The unions of the class direction, so-called labour unions, took the particular place among the appeared organisations. The society ‘Zorya’ (the society of Ukrainian craftsmen, manufacturers and tradesmen) was founded in Lviv with the aim of protection the interests and the lows of Ukrainian craftsmen, providing their social and material defence, cultural and educational development. With the aim of realisation of the tasks, determined by the statute, the society began the active work, formed a branched structure, and used different resources and means. In imitation of the Lviv centre, new branches and separate related organisations appeared. The following sections were distinguished in the society: the sporting section, the educational-entertaining one, the music one, the section of women and care of the youth, self-helped fund. The library was also formed here. The educational work with the youth was conducted. For its successful realisation special recommendations and rules were determined. The work of self-educational circle was also well-managed. The society started to publish its own periodicals: ‘Professional messenger’ and ‘Young workers’, which promote the popularization of the society’s activity and became the means for the rise of the Ukrainian workers’ cultural-educational level.
