Summary/Abstract: The article attempts to present the different views on the issue for the official name of the country, formulated during the constitutional debate in Bulgaria, developed in the period 1956-1971. The conclusion is that during the discussion two principal opinions were reached. One, that can conditionally be called pragmatic, was against uncalled for changes and for the maintaining of the existing name. The other - conditionally designated as doctrinaire-dogmatic, wanted a change, which necessarily to incorporate the definition “socialist”. Reasons are given, that the main role for the victory of the pragmatic approach had Todor Zhivkov, leader of the Bulgarian communist party at that time. In the occupied by the First Secretary of the Central Committee of Bulgarian Communist Party position obvious was not some principled theoretical vision, but rather fear that change of the state.s name can cause damage to his personal strategic interests.
