Summary/Abstract: The category of seemingness that emerged in philosophy became the subject of attention of the Russian linguists relatively recently – only in the 90s of the twentieth century. Earlier the means of the expression of seemingness, mainly lexical and grammatical (the introductory component кажется / казалось, the link verb of the compound nominal predicate казался / показался невероятным and the contact word of the main part of complex sentence Казалось, что), were studied as means of expressing modality, the predecessors of which were Ch. Bally and V. V. Vinogradov. Further development of linguistic science has led to the study of the category of evidentiality (or “zasvidetelstvovannosti”) in the Russian language, from which the linguistic category of seemingnesss pun off. It is noteworthy that in Western European and American tradition the category of seemingness still does not stand out as a separate category, and its means of expression is still classified as the means of the expression of evidentiality. The article is devoted to the origins of the category of seemingness, as well as the development of its understanding in philosophy and modern linguistics. A brief review of the Russian linguistic research devoted to this category based on modal, modus and textual approaches is provided
