Summary/Abstract: The article reveals an approach of the Lithuanian aesthete Žibartas Jackūnas to the methodological prospects of aesthetic study. He seeks to establish the theoretical base of a semantic approach and the principle of meaning for the analysis of aesthetic phenomena, as well as to contribute to the dissemination of the semantic direction in aesthetics. An important part of this idea is the analysis of meanings which are revealed in aesthetic experience. The latter is understood as the result of the interpretation of an aesthetic phenomenon which consists of two – semantic and emotional – components. Jackūnas defines the concepts of generalised experience and experience differently and examines their interaction in detail in the process of interpretation. He focuses on the sense of values and emotional response to a work of art and the significance they acquire in aesthetic experience. The article explores which key aspects of semantic aesthetic experience, meaning of a work of art and interpretation are analysed in Jackūnas’ works, discusses the types of meanings that appear when interpreting a work of art, as well as compares the concepts of artistic truth of Vasily Seseman and Žibartas Jackūnas.
