Summary/Abstract: The paper discusses the influence of the mother tongue on learning and the acquisition of foreign pronunciation. Special attention was given to the concept and perception of the mother tongue in the literature, as well as the Serbian language as a mother tongue and English as a foreign. In the efforts to highlight the great importance of the Serbian language as a mother tongue in learning English pronunciation, it was necessary to compare several phonetic elements of the two linguistic systems, primarily vocalic and consonantal. There is also a brief review of the supporting factors which can further complicate, slow down and even prevent the acquiring of pronunciation of foreign languages, as well as suggestions for overcoming them.
