Summary/Abstract: Recent sociological research on elite groups in Central and Eastern Europe has mostly focused on political elites.2) Rather less attention has been paid to other social or cultural elites, and in the context of the multiethnic states in Central Europe there have been surprisingly few investigations of the history of the elites within ethnic minorities. My paper focuses on the Jewish minority in Central Europe, arguing that the most influential economic and social elite within Jewish society in the postemancipation period was the Independent Order of B'nai B'rith.
