Summary/Abstract: The murder of a nineteen-year old woman named Anežka Hrùzová committed in the spring of 1899 near the town of Polná on the Czech-Moravian border caused an uproar. Immediately, rumours began spreading that poor Anežka had become the victim of a Jewish ritual murder, that she was 'koshered down'. The popular whisper soon found its culprit: the common people pointed their fingers at the Jewish vagrant Leopold Hilsner.
