»Operation Gutenberg«. personal Remindings of »1984«

Summary/Abstract: Twenty Years ago - magic date - Geroge Orwell's novel »1984« was published in the Soviet Union as Samizdat print. The author reminds the absurd story of this publication. Orwell had arbitrarily choosen 1984 as a literary fiction, which should only indicate that totalitarian rule was not something to become true only in centuries, but is a very concrete danger in present time. In fact, »1984« excerted a kind of maelstrom on reality, whioch can be compared only to the literary fiction of the »Bloomsday«, i.e. the 16th of June 1904, the day of James Joyce's »Ulisses«. Even in the Soviet Union, where »1984« was on the index, since the beginning of the 1980ies the political and philosophical discourse centred around the magic date, and even the official press reacted in its uncomparable manner and language. Vor zwanzig Jahren erschien, magisches Datum, George Orwells Roman »1984« in der Sowjetunion als Raubdruck. Dieser absurden Geschichte erinnert sich unsere Autorin. Orwell hatte diese Jahreszahl seinerzeit willkürlich gewählt, eine literarische Fiktion, die lediglich einen Fingerzeig auf die bedrohliche Nähe totalitärer Herrschaft geben sollte. Tatsächlich entwickelte »1984« einen Sog auf die Wirklichkeit, vergleichbar nur mit der literarischen Fiktion des »Bloomsday «, also des 16. Juni 1904, Handlungstag des »Ulysses« von James Joyce. Sogar in der Sowjetunion, wo »1984« auf dem Index stand, drehte sich seit Anfang der Achtzigerjahre der philosophische und politische Diskurs stark um dieses magische Datum, auf das auch die offizielle Presse in ihrer unvergleichlichen Art und Sprache reagierte.
