The Past doesn't really end

Summary/Abstract: The "Stasi" as a contribution to the prevention of dictatorship 14 years after the end of the German Democratic Republic still again and again new cases of Stasi arbitrariness are disclosed. At the same time new methods aregoing to be deveolped, which allow new forms of evaluation of the archived material. Thus the archives, regardless all the ugliness of what they have to tell, could become a valuable instrument to prevent future dictatorship. The evaluation of the Stasi-dossiers as historical sources and didactic material could establish standards for the exposure to other dictatorships too. Die Stasi als Beitrag zur Diktatur-Prävention 14 Jahre nach dem Ende der DDR tauchen immer noch neue Fälle der Stasi-Willkür auf. Zugleich zeichnet sich ab, dass neue technologische Methoden eine Verarbeitung des Materials zulassen. Ein Material, das bei all seiner Hässlichkeit zu einem Instrument der Diktatur-Prävention werden könnte: Die Aufarbeitung der Stasi-Akten als Geschichtsquelle und Lehrstück könnte zum Vorbild werden für den Umgang mit anderen Diktaturen.
