Summary/Abstract: The paper presents the activity of a Illuminist Viennese librarian who shaped in a considerable manner the library science in Central and Eastern Europe. His love for books was accompanied by his endeavor to hand on his knowledge to others, among his students we can find count Ferenc Széchényi, the founder of the Hungarian National Library and National Museum in Budapest. He also compiled an anthology with works of the contemporary poets, the first anthology of the German literature made for the classroom. His extensive knowledge, his critical thinking, his eagerness to keep himself informed about the collections of the largest European libraries and about everything published in the known world turned this library keeper into a true and hard to surpass role model.
